Outdoor temperatures around the state have been in the single digits lately and that's been keeping most of us indoors. That makes it extremely important for us to remind everyone about the importance of a carbon monoxide detector. Carbon monoxide is a product of combustion of organic matter with insufficient oxygen supply and is often produced in domestic or industrial settings by motor vehicles and other gasoline-powered tools, heaters, and cooking equipment. Exposures at 100 ppm or greater can be dangerous to human health.
Symptoms of mild acute poisoning include headaches, vertigo, and flu-like effects; larger exposures can lead to significant toxicity of the central nervous system and heart, and even death.
Our systems specialists have reported that most of the homes that they visit do not have either smoke or carbon monoxide detectors in bedrooms. Many residences don't have them at all. Please be sure to invest in a good carbon monoxide detector for each bedroom, the kitchen, and the basement. Your health and your family are worth it.
